You can grow almost any type of garden with seedlings. Bulbs are also included in this category. With a little time and patience you can accomplish amazing things with your own seedlings. Planning, developing and growing your garden anytime of the year is just one benefit of starting with garden seedlings.
Have you ever purchased a plant from a nursery only to watch it die a short time after planting? Creating your own garden from scratch gives you the benefit of knowing the health and environment of that plant when it comes time to put it in the ground or a larger container.
So, what are the possibilities with seedlings? You can have fruits & vegetables, flowers or herbs.
First, decide what you want in your garden. This will lead you to the proper research for those type of seedlings. Starting your garden from seedlings may seem overwhelming at first but it is an enjoyable experience because you can watch your plant develop from the beginning, nurturing it all the way. You can ensure it gets the right amount of light, water and nutrients. Once you get things organized it is a very manageable, and budget friendly endeavor.
After your research, you will have an idea on the materials you need and the location that is best for your seedlings to grow. Seedlings need some light but full light and hot sun is too much. It is a delicate balance at their young age. A maintenance routine will help you with
this balance so that your young plants flourish and develop into strong flowers or vegetables.
Seedlings can be planted anytime of year because this takes place indoors. You can determine the appropriate time that works for you. However, winter time is a terrific time of year because the seedlings will turn into young plants which can be planted outdoors as they mature when the warmer weather arrives. If you want a container garden, you can move your winter plants into larger containers and onto a porch or other outside area when winter is gone and the last frost has passed.
Although you need to go with your desire and passion on what to plant, here are some tips:
Deciding what to plant
Do some research on what plants you want to put in the garden. Whether it’s vegetables or flowers, determine the sensitivity to sun. Does it do well in full sun or does it need partial shade? What amount of spacing does it need between plants? How deep does it need to be planted? If vegetables what is the period of time to reach maturity? If flowers, is it an annual or perennial, how often and how long does it bloom?
Where to set up the seedlings
Choose a convenient location that has a good light source. A minimum temperature of at least 55°f is going to be needed. Adding an additional light source is an option. A 40 watt fluorescent light or grow light on a timer works nicely. Another option is a makeshift greenhouse.
Getting the supplies
The easiest way to get started is to get a used egg carton. Find one that is made of recyclable material and poke a small hole in the bottom of each egg holder. Fill each hole half way with some potting soil. This will be your starting place for your seedlings. You will put your seedlings into each egg container and push each just below the dirt. Water each one thoroughly but do not wash out the seedlings. Each day, make sure the dirt is not dry and water enough just to keep it moist. Make sure it gets some light but not direct sun. You are now on your way! There is a lot to learn but this will get you started until you learn more about the process.
Growing your own garden is a wonderful experience that you can do over and over, year after year. You can even learn to collect seedlings from your mature plants and share them with friends and other gardeners. The beauty is endless! Get started NOW!
